What is a back, neck or shoulder nerve entrapment?\r\n\r\n

Neck nerve entrapment, commonly known as a trapped or pinched nerve, in most cases presents as an excruciating pain that may start in the neck and may radiate into one shoulder or the other as well as travelling into the arms and fingers.

\r\n\r\n

This is known as cervical radiculopathy. The pain from a trapped or pinched nerve can be relentless, excruciating and debilitating. Sleep is almost impossible to come by even with the strongest prescribed medication.

\r\n\r\n

Prescribed Medication

\r\n\r\n

Medications only mask the symptoms and rarely work or dull the pain, the medication that you have been prescribed may be so strong they will affect your daily actives, such as health and safety issues at work. These must be taken into account on grounds of safety.

\r\n\r\n

Driving on prescribed medication: to drive under the influence of drugs is a criminal offence – this also means prescribed medication. Cold or Low Level Laser Pain Relief

A Chiropractor will gently manipulate the trapped or pinched nerve free. This is by far the fastest and most effective method, bringing fast effective pain relief.

\r\n\r\n

There is also further significant pain relief to be had through a modality known as Cold or low level laser therapy; this modality has five star rating for pain relief and is used at this clinic. Further information can be found under our listing “Pain Relief”.

Causes of back or neck Shoulder entrapment

\r\n\r\n

There are many causes of trapped or pinched nerve that surrounds the neck area: some may occur as a result of an old or new injury such as whiplash (WAD) or a medical condition.

\r\n\r\n

However, for most people this could be the result of an injury known by various names such as a bulging, prolapsed, herniated or slipped disc.

\r\n\r\n

This condition involves the discs – the soft gel-like structures positioned between the vertebrae in your neck and spine. When one or more of them slips- the nerves around can get trapped or pinched in between the disc and the vertebrae resulting in excruciating pain.

\r\n\r\n

A bulging, prolapsed, herniated or slipped disc is not the only cause of a trapped or pinched nerve in the area of the neck.

\r\n\r\n

Sleeping in an awkward position can cause trapped or pinched nerve leading to excruciating pain to the head, neck or shoulders.  This is probably the most common cause of a trapped or pinched nerve in the neck.

\r\n\r\n

However, there is likely to be an excruciating pain for several weeks if not months. Ice packs will help to alleviate the swelling and the inflammation that accompany a trapped or pinched nerve.

\r\n\r\n

How does it feel?

\r\n\r\n

Sometimes the trapped nerve can be painless however, in the most cases the common symptom is severe pain. The pain may be felt in the neck arm, or chest. Weakness may occur in the shoulder.

\r\n\r\n

What should you do?

\r\n\r\n

Nerve entrapments in the neck do not get better on their own; they need manipulation and doctor prescribed medications will rarely work  if the cause of the entrapment is not treated. If you have or suspect you have a nerve entrapment, consult a Chiropractor who is an expert in dealing with trapped nerves.

\r\n\r\n

What shouldn’t you do?

\r\n\r\n

If you have an entrapped nerve in the neck, do not ignore the problem. This can lead to a very long and very painful recovery.

\r\n\r\n

Could there be any long-term effects?

\r\n\r\n

Nerve entrapments in the neck may not produce any long-term effects as long as they are properly diagnosed and appropriately treated. If the source of the neck pain is not treated, a wasting of the muscles may occur.

\r\n\r\n

Management

\r\n\r\n

Seeking advice from a is important in the treatment of an entrapped nerve in the shoulder. Initially chiropractor can assist in diagnosing the cause of the problem and establishing its severity.

\r\n\r\n

Manipulation of the shoulder and the surrounding area will be the best course of action, and far better than the conventional route – “Surgery” or long term administration of “Prescribed Medication”, Acupuncture, or Cold or Low Level Laser Therapy is a modality with a five star rating for pain relief and the acceleration of the healing process.

Nerve entrapments around the shoulder. What is it?

\r\n\r\n

A nerve entrapment around the neck refers to when a nerve within the neck becomes trapped or compressed by tissues surrounding it.

\r\n\r\n

How does it happen?

\r\n\r\n

Nerves in the neck may become entrapped when adhesions develop between the nerve and muscles, tissues, discs or vertebrae that surround this area. These adhesions may restrict how much the nerve can move forwards and backwards as the arm is moved.

\r\n\r\n

This may cause overstretching of the nerve in the area of the adhesions resulting in the interference of signals being conducted by the nerve, or alternatively the nerves in the neck may become entrapped by extremely tight tissues surrounding this area.

\r\n\r\n

These may compress the nerve and interfere with the conduction of its signals. In the Neck the most commonly entrapped nerve is the suprascapular nerve, entrapped may occur as it passes over the edges of the shoulder blade.

\r\n\r\n

How does it feel?

\r\n\r\n

When a nerve in the shoulder is entrapped may not be felt, however, the most common feeling is severe pain. This will occur for the suprascapular nerve pain will felt over the shoulder blade. However, pain may be felt in the arm, neck or chest. Weakness may occur in the shoulder.
